Music Appreciation Talks at Blackheath Halls with Matthew Taylor
Winter 2010 Course: VAUGHAN WILLIAMS - ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
Since 1991 Matthew has been running a series of music appreciation illustrated
talks at Blackheath Halls. Each term is devoted to one chosen subject, usually
the works of one composer, group or theme in which Matthew illustrates at the
piano and plays recordings.
The next 10 week course has talks on Monday mornings from 10am to 12
noon in the Recital Room at Blackheath Halls. The course runs from:
Monday 11th January to Monday 22nd March 2010 (except 1st March).
The course fee is £65 payable at the first session.
Newcomers can have a taster for free.
Course Description
Following the extensive celebrations of Vaughan Williams's music in 2008, this course will pay homage to this
composer by surveying his orchestral music, including works written for solo instrument and orchestra, ranging from the
early pieces before World War 1 to the Ninth Symphony completed the year of his death in 1958. We shall discover how
Vaughan Williams rather than being a composer whose scope is restricted to British audiences and musicians had a big,
all embracing vision which places him alongside some of the most important composers of the 20th Century.
